Internal Medicine In Israel

The departments of general (INTERNAL) medicine provide care for a huge variety of diseases and situations. They are also engaged in research and treatments of several unique medical problems.

Allergy and clinical immunology

Clinical Activity

Clinical Immunology and Allergy Units are responsible for the management of patients with autoimmune and allergic disorders, as well as other pathological conditions of the immune system.

 Allergy clinic
 Lupus and autoimmunity clinic
 Clinical immunology
 Clinical immunology and allergy laboratories

Research Activity

The main projects focus in autoimmunity, SLE (systemic lupus), autoimmune arthritis and the physiology of allergic responses.

Clinical Activity

Treatment of patients with lipid disorders, atherosclerosis or its complications and initiation of clinical preventive programs.
Clinical, biochemical and molecular diagnosis of dyslipidemias, Cardiomyopathies, and rare metabolic disorders.

Specialized Tests

Quantification of plasma lipoprotein concentrations by ultracentrifugation
 Genotyping of apolipoprotein genes
 Analysis of specific disease-causing mutations

Research Activity

The main research interests are in molecular genetics of dyslipidemias, atherosclerosis, and other causes of sudden death.

Clinical Nutrition

Clinical Activities

Multidisciplinary teams of physicians, dieticians, psychiatrists and psychologists provide outpatient treatment for patients with obesity and the more severe eating disorders - anorexia and bulimia.

Research Activities

 Disorders of body weight regulation.
The effect of nutrition on cognitive functions
Biological regulation of the antioxidant system
 Mediterranean Diet and disease

Endocrinology – General and Pediatric

Patients care is provided both within the internal medical Departments, and as consultation services in the other departments of the hospitals. The Endocrinology laboratories are divided into clinical service and research laboratories. The clinical service laboratories are fully computerized, and use frontline technology for assaying hormones, hormone intermediates, and other tests of interest in endocrinology, including molecular genetic tests, covering the requirements of a variety of situations, with special emphasis on all diabetes types.
Additional interests are:
Endocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract
 Malignant endocrine tumors
 Diagnostic procedures in Cushing's syndrome
 Inborn errors of steroids-genesis

Research Activity

The main research interests are in the field of diabetes, and the biology of the beta-cell.

Clinical Assessment

Geriatric assessment: based on the thorough screening, the staff makes a full or partial geriatric assessment using a battery of standard tests and questionnaires. Recommendations on further medical, nursing, functional and social care and are an integrated part of the patients' medical record.

Excellent and sophisticated clinical immunology laboratories provide all the tests needed for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment recommendations of rheumatic disease e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus and more.

Arthritis (inflammation of the joints) of all sorts is a crippling disease that includes little less than 100 different conditions that cause aching, pain and loss of function. It may occur at all ages and almost everyone, if he lives long enough, will develop some form of arthritis. Incessant inflammation and cartilage degeneration cause pain, swelling and destruction, leading to disability.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a genetic disease affecting Jews of all ethnic backgrounds, but particularly those of North African and Iraqi extraction. The disease can be expressed in different forms, from mild to severe, and might cause many complications including kidney damage. Israel is the international leader in researching and treating FMF patients.
